ISO 45001

ISO 45001, introduced on 12 March 2018, is the international standard for occupational health and safety management. It replaces OHSAS 18001. It also makes integration with other management systems easier and is fully aligned with the 2015 versions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Principles of ISO 45001

  • Specifies the requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system
  • Provides guidance and procedures for organisations
  • Enables organisations to create safe workplaces
  • Helps prevent workplace injuries, illness and fatalities
  • Actively improves health and safety performance
  • Applies to all organisations worldwide, regardless of their size, type or activity

Benefits of ISO 45001 certification

  • Lower operating costs: fewer working hours lost to injury and ill health, lower legal fees and compensation costs.
  • Better risk management: identify potential incidents and take measures that minimise risks and protect employees.
  • Better relationships with stakeholders.
  • Legal compliance.
  • Greater credibility: independent verification against a globally recognised industry standard increases your credibility.
  • Social responsibility: introducing a structured management system helps demonstrate CSR and supports the organisation’s culture.

The structure of ISO 45001 follows the annex common to other ISO management system standards, which makes implementing integrated systems easier and more efficient. Management commitment under ISO 45001 requires occupational health and safety to be built into the organisation’s overall management system, which means that leadership must take a more active role in health and safety. Worker participation under ISO 45001 puts the emphasis on employee training and education, so that employees can identify risks and help create an effective safety programme, ensuring broader employee involvement.

If you are certified to OHSAS 18001, you must migrate to ISO 45001. The usual three-year migration period applies. If you have already implemented the ISO 14001 environmental standard, integration will be very easy for you.
