ISO standards
ISO 19011
ISO 19011 is an international standard that provides guidelines for auditing management systems, including quality management systems (ISO 9001) and environmental management systems (ISO 14001). It sets out the principles of auditing, the management of audit programmes and the conduct of management system audits.
Benefits of ISO 19011
- A standardised audit process and methodology: it gives organisations a uniform and consistent approach to auditing. With a single methodology, organisations can make sure all audits follow the same rules and standards, which increases their credibility and accuracy.
- Guidance on managing an audit programme: the standard offers detailed guidance on managing and conducting audits. With a clearly defined programme, organisations can plan and coordinate their audit activities better, which leads to better organisation and use of resources.
- Principles for effective audits: the standard sets out principles that lead to effective and objective audits.
- A framework for auditor competence and evaluation: it provides a framework for defining auditor qualifications, training and evaluation, so organisations can make sure their auditors have the knowledge and skills needed for high-quality audits.
- Tools for continual improvement through audits: the standard supports continual improvement through regular audits and follow-up actions. Audits help identify risks and areas for improvement and provide feedback for improving business processes and management systems.
ISO 19011 is a guideline for organisations that set up and carry out audits of management systems. It covers the entire life cycle of audit systems, from their design to their evaluation. It is based on seven principles and contains strategies for continually improving how company audits are implemented. Although this standard is not a certification standard and does not contain specific requirements, it provides organisations with guidance on implementing ISO management system standards correctly through cross-checking measures and thorough documentation.
ISO 19011 sets the benchmarks for a standardised, well-functioning audit system, giving organisations a solid framework for building their audit processes. This covers not only auditing management systems, but also creating audit programmes. As a result, organisations can plan, conduct and manage audits in a systematic and objective way.
The standard also ensures consistency with ISO management system standards such as:
- ISO 9001 – Quality management system (QMS)
- ISO 14001 – Environmental management system (EMS)
- ISO 31000 – Risk management
ISO 19011 is essential for every organisation that needs to carry out internal audits or manage external audits. It sets a common framework for audits and ensures they are carried out consistently and effectively. Using ISO 19011 helps organisations demonstrate the company’s credibility to customers and stakeholders. It improves management systems and processes through structured audits and makes consistent auditor training and evaluation easier.
